Crush with Mortar and Pestle

Description

A mortar and pestle are used to break down samples that are either easy to crush or, there is a small amount of material and special care is needed in the crushing process not to lose material.

Procedure

• workspace_prep

• Place material into mortar.

• Begin light tapping the sample with the pestle.

• Continue until there is a range of small rock pieces and fine material.

• Sieve the material and take the larger fraction and place back into the mortar and continue to crush.

• Repeat until material is in the desired size fraction.
